Austen Kroll was born a bit further north in Washington D.C., but finds himself in Charleston by way of Charlotte, NC. Growing up in the south, his parents Tom and Wendy raised him to be the contagiously charismatic, undoubtedly kind and relentlessly loyal friend that every southern gentleman should strive to be. After graduating from the University of Alabama, Austen, forever the adventurous spirit, headed to the Rocky Mountains and his travels found him as far as New Zealand. In the immortal words of Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant, “Mama called, and when mama calls then you just have to come running.” This ramblin’ man finally felt the tug of home calling, and made his way back down south. Charleston seemed like the obvious choice for the young stargazer who vacationed with his family at their second home on Kiawah Island since childhood. Not soon after relocating, Austen found himself in the company of none other than Mr. Shep Rose. The two became fast friends, and even faster competition t

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Washington state health officials have confirmed a gonorrhea outbreak confined to a single county. The Union-Bulletin reports that the Washington state department of health has confirmed 27 reported cases in the last three months in Walla Walla County, about 250 miles southeast of Seattle. Health officials say in the same time span last year there were only six reported cases. Health officials say the disease is now more drug-resistant with one treatment option remaining out of the five recommended methods available in 2006. Officials say the sexually transmitted disease has bacteria that could affect the reproductive tract, eyes, throat, mouth, and rectum. Officials say if left untreated gonorrhea could lead to numerous complications including infertility, blindness and increased risk of contracting other sexually transmitted diseases. https://ift.tt/2MEwAHV

Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and treatable disease, but unfortunately is one of the main public health problems in Afghanistan. The social stigma associated with having TB negatively impacts the early case detection. And even when patients identify TB, the expense of anti-TB drugs on the market often prohibit patients from being able to afford the full the treatment period required. USAID is funding a project to attempt to address these challenges by involving private hospitals in the Urban Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) system along with the Department of National Tuberculosis Program (NTP). Emam Zaman hospital is one of the private health facilities (HFs) involved in the Urban DOTS system and since implementing DOTS, more than 600 TB patients have been registered and are taking anti-TB drugs. One of the patients, Ghulam Reza, was originally referred to a private practitioner, but was not properly diagnosed. He was referred to a number of private clinics who c

General 1) What is HIV? HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is a retrovirus that infects cells of the human immune system (mainly CD4-positive T-cells and macrophages—key components of the cellular immune system) and destroys or impairs their function. Infection with this virus results in the progressive depletion of the immune system, leading to immunodeficiency. The immune system is considered deficient when it can no longer fulfil its role of fighting off infection and diseases. People with immunodeficiency are much more vulnerable to a wide range of infections and cancers, most of which are rare among people without immunodeficiency. Diseases associated with severe immunodeficiency are known as opportunistic infections because they take advantage of a weakened immune system. 2) What is AIDS? AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and describes the collection of symptoms and infections associated with acquired deficiency of the immune system. Infection

According to that preliminary data, 7,730 cases of chlamydia were reported to the department in 2019, a 9.6 percent increase from 2018. There were 2,572 cases of gonorrhea in 2019 — a 14.6 percent increase from the year before. Public health officials won’t see finalized numbers until the end of the year, but the preliminary data follows the same upward trend of diagnosed cases among Iowans seen in recent years, said George Walton, STD program manager for the Iowa Department of Public Health. “The trends that we’re seeing the first half of 2019 are pretty similar to what we’ve seen in the last couple years here in the state,” Walton said.
