Ask the Vet Retained Placenta Causes and Treatments 11/25/2019 - DTN The Progressive Farmer

Image
Herd nutrition and mineral programs can increase instances of retained placenta in the herd. (DTN/Progressive Farmer photo by Dan Miller) By Dr. Ken McMillan Contributing Editor QUESTION We had several cows with retained placentas last year. They eventually passed, but what should we do in these cases? Our old vet used to come out, flush the uterus and give antibiotics. He has retired, and the closest veterinarian is a long way away. ANSWER Our recommendation is to not use antibiotics for at least three days, assuming the cow is not sick. We often recommend an injection of Lutalyse or another prostaglandin. These drugs cause uterine contraction and help expel the placenta. A mild, controlled infection in the attachment sites of the placenta and the uterus may actually help the placenta release. Never try to pull the placenta out. Gravity will put gentle, constant pressure on the placenta. By pulling it, you may leave small parts attached; they will take longer to pass ...

Wisconsin deer hunters: Shoot those feral pigs - Duluth News Tribune

Image
Just make sure it’s not your neighbor’s domestic hog. Feral pig sightings and harvests should be reported using the Feral Pig Reporting Form found on the feral pig hunting page of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website. The wild pigs, which have caused extensive damage to forests in some southern states, can be found across a wide variety of habitats and are highly destructive because of the rooting they do in search of food. They are also efficient predators, preying on many species, including white-tailed deer fawns and ground-nesting birds like grouse, woodcock, turkeys and songbirds. Feral pigs are known to carry several diseases dangerous to humans and the domestic swine industry, including swine brucellosis, pseudorabies and leptospirosis. In Wisconsin, there is no wild population of feral pigs, the DNR said. And recent reports of feral pigs in several counties turned out to be escaped domestic pigs instead. Domestic pigs may not be shot. "Each yea...

RHINELANDER - People count on nurses to provide quality healthcare to themselves and their loved ones. A nationwide shortage of nurses hits harder in rural areas like the Northwoods. Nurse practitioner Tiffany Miller loves working in Rhinelander, but she says most nurses want to land a job in a bigger city. "It has to be the right fit, and people have to truly enjoy the Northwoods to want to come up here and work," said Miller. Panel: Electronic ID benefits cattle management | Dairy - Capital Press

Image
SUN VALLEY, Idaho – While USDA suspended its 2023 deadline for mandatory electronic identification ear tags, the agency’s goal of bringing animal identification into the electronic age hasn’t changed. EID for adult cattle moving interstate and for all cattle required to have a brucellosis vaccination appears to be just a matter of time. The Idaho Cattle Association hosted a panel of early adopters at its annual convention here to arm Idaho producers with information about the practical use of the technology. Dawn Anderson said her family started using EID for heifers on their Hereford and Red Angus ranch in Gooding in 2015. It was a way to help manage their operation — and cut down on family fights, she said. “It just keeps really good track of what’s going on with that calf. It’s a unique identification for that individual,” she said. Cattle can be easily scanned in the pasture or going through the chute, and data associated with their EID number is in the ranch’s system and ca...

Montana AG Network Montana Ag Network: Brucellosis quarantines lifted in SW Montana Lane Nordlund 3:28 - KTVH

Image
Montana livestock officials and ranchers work year-round in the states Designated Surveillance Area to prevent the spread of brucellosis from wildlife to livestock. Recently, 19 cattle herds in South West Montana were placed under quarantine as 26 bovine were suspected of having brucellosis. Due to Montana’s continuing disease monitoring and red flags that were raised, follow-up testing yielded better results. For the last decade Montana has utilized the Rapid Antigen Plate (RAP) screening test for brucellosis. Recently, the test became no longer available nationwide. As a result, the state is using the Fluorescent Polarization Antibody test or FPA test. State Veterinarian Dr. Marty Zaluski, DVM explained that the FPA tests sensitivity is most likely what led to the increase in suspected brucellosis cases. “One of the challenges of the FPA, is that it's super sensitive,” said Zaluski. “I think also it hasn't been used on such a broad scale of animals as the origina...
