[Full text] Prebiotic Colloidal Oat Supports the Growth of Cutaneous Commensal Bac | CCID - Dove Medical Press

Introduction The skin is the largest organ of the body and home to a vast array of microbes. 1 Phyla that dominate the skin are Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes, with more than 60% of the bacterial species belonging to three genera, including Staphylococcus (Firmicutes); Corynebacterium (Actinobacteria), and Propionibacterium (Actinobacteria). 2 Sites rich in sebaceous secretion are preferentially colonized by lipophilic bacteria such as Cutibacterium acnes (previously known as Propionibacterium acnes ), whereas moist locations such as skin folds are favored by Corynebacterium spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. S. epidermidis is one of the most abundant bacterial species of the skin microbiome. It is a mutualistic, Gram-positive, facultative anaerobe that constitutes up to 90% of the aerobic resident flora, and certain strains have been associated with skin health. 3 Multiple skin conditions have been associated with alterations in the diversity ...

Keratinocytes control skin immune homeostasis through de novo–synthesized glucocorticoids - Science Advances

Image
INTRODUCTION The skin epithelial immune microenvironment deploys several mechanisms to regulate internal and environment-derived stress signals. While tolerance is induced toward innocuous factors, invasion of pathogens and contact with damaging substances activate keratinocytes and skin-resident immune cells to initiate proinflammatory processes resulting in skin-associated inflammation. Mechanisms for resolution and tissue recovery are necessary to maintain a balanced homeostasis and prevent the development of cutaneous immunopathologies ( 1 ). The immunosuppressive effect of glucocorticoids (GC) is widely accepted and exploited in the therapy of inflammatory diseases ( 2 ). Despite their pleiotropic and adverse side effects, GC represent the mainstay in clinical therapy for more than 70 years, as diverse inflammatory disorders are still efficiently treated using synthetic GC ( 3 ). However, the potential impact of endogenous GC in the regulation of local inflammation in severa...

Intertrigo is a skin condition that causes a rash in folds of the skin, such as under the breasts, in the groin, or under the tummy fold. It happens when areas of moist skin rub together. Bacteria and yeast can grow in this environment, leading to an infection. In this article, we describe what intertrigo is, what it looks like, and what causes it. We also cover diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Intertrigo is a skin condition that happens when folds of skin chafe against each other. It usually develops in the inner thighs or armpits, or under the breasts or tummy fold. Some people may experience yeast or bacterial infections in the folds of skin. Areas of moist skin rubbing together cause intertrigo. The warm, damp environment makes the skin conducive to irritation and the growth of yeast and bacteria, which can lead to an infection. While it can happen at any age, intertrigo tends to affect infants, older people, and those with a reduced ability to ...
