Vanquishing jock itch requires two-pronged approach | Ask the Doctors - Santa Maria Times

Image
Dear Doctor: I'm a 74-year-old male with a stubborn case of jock itch. I've tried every over-the-counter ointment, powder and soap, with no success. A prescription cream keeps it from getting worse, but it doesn't stop the problem. Do you have any other recommendations on how to treat this? Dear Reader: Jock itch is a topical infection that can be caused by keratin-loving fungi known as dermatophytes, and by a yeast known as candida. Also known as tinea cruris, jock itch is a red, scaly and very itchy rash that appears in areas of the body that stay warm and moist. It gets its name because it's common in athletes, and also from its location in the area of the groin and inner thighs. It's more common in men than in women, and it can also arise in people who perspire freely, individuals who are overweight and people with a weakened immune system. The battle against ...

China Extends Insurance Coverage for High-End Drugs - Sixth Tone

Image
China extended state insurance coverage to 74 new medicines in an update to the country's medical insurance catalog. 11 were eliminated after being deemed ineffective, leaving a total of 2,860 medicines. The newly-added drugs include antibiotics, cancer drugs, and gynecological drugs, among others. Seven highly specialized drugs for rare diseases were also added. According to the National Healthcare Security Administration, the addition includes 67 medicines made by a single company. In the absence of competition, the government set prices through negotiations, winning an average reduction of 62% compared to previous market prices. One of the biggest price reductions was for nusinersen, a drug used to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a rare inherited condition that reduces muscle strength and movement in infants, children, and adults. It was first brought to China in 2019 at the sky-high price of 697,000 yuan (nearly $110,000) per injection. A patient needs six injections in th...

Scalp Infections: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment - Verywell Health

Image
A scalp infection is caused by bacteria and fungi that entered the hair follicles or skin of the scalp. Having a scalp infection can lead to various types of skin rashes on the scalp as well as hair loss. Treatment for scalp infections will vary depending on the cause.   Triocean / Getty Images Folliculitis Folliculitis is an infection in which one or more hair follicles become inflamed and swollen. It is most commonly caused by bacteria, but it can also develop because of a virus, parasite, or fungus. Scalp folliculitis causes small, very itchy pustules to form on the scalp, often most troublesome on the frontal hairline. There may be many or only a small number of lesions (abnormalities in the skin). They are often itchy, and become sore and crusted. The cause of scalp folliculitis is not exactly clear. It is generally considered to be an inflammatory reaction to parts of the hair ...

Skin infections can cause rheumatic fever: Study - The Siasat Daily

Image
Washington : A recent study led by a team of international researchers has found that skin infections are likely to be a significant cause of rheumatic fever. The study has been published in the 'BMJ Global Health Journal'. Acute rheumatic fever is an important cause of serious heart disease, particularly for Maori and Pacific children and young people in Aotearoa, New Zealand and for many children and young people in low and middle-income countries. Professor Michael Baker from the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington, explained that it has long been recognized that rheumatic fever is a complication of group A streptococcus (GAS) pharyngitis, commonly known as "strep throat". However, new research indicated that streptococcus skin infections can also trigger the disease. "This study is a major breakthrough in understanding the causes of acute rheumatic fever," Professor Baker said. "It is the world's first study...

FDA Warning on Atrial Fibrillation Drug Multaq - WebMD

Image
July 22, 2011 -- If you're taking the atrial fibrillation drug Multaq, the FDA wants you to call your doctor right away. Don't stop taking the drug -- that could be dangerous. But the FDA wants patients to be aware that a clinical trial of Multaq, called PALLAS, was halted when the drug doubled the risk of death, stroke, and heart failure hospitalization in heart patients with permanent atrial fibrillation. Multaq is approved to treat paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (intermittent), persistent atrial fibrillation, or atrial flutter. The big question -- now the subject of an FDA investigation -- is exactly how the PALLAS findings apply to current patients. Multaq was approved in 2009 after the ATHENA clinical trial showed it decreased deaths in patients with non-permanent atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. But this is now the fifth time the FDA has reported signals of possible risk from Multaq: Early 2010: The FDA warned of possible signals of congestive heart failure. On Feb...

iPLEDGE Rollout Described as a Failure, Chaotic, and a Disaster - Medscape

Image
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is convening an emergency meeting today with representatives from the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA) to discuss the flawed rollout of the new, gender-neutral approach to the isotretinoin risk mitigation program that launched Monday and what can be done to fix it. By most accounts, the rollout was disastrous, chaotic, and a failure. Dermatologists on Twitter and elsewhere are angry and frustrated, with some calling for a temporary halt to the program until the bugs can be ironed out. On Twitter Wednesday, the Academy posted: "Due to the unacceptable situation with #iPLEDGE, the @US_FDA has convened an emergency meeting with AADA representatives tomorrow, December 16." The switch to a new platform was met with frustration from physicians, pharmacists, and patients alike. The new website crashed repeatedly, with physicians and patients complaining they got locked out or bounced of...

Serotonin and norepinephrine have a strong impact on mood, as well as on many other functions of the body. Venlafaxine prolongs the action of these neurotransmitters by preventing their removal from nerve endings in the brain. Venlafaxine comes with a black box warning, which is the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) highest level of warning. Children, adolescents, and young adults starting or changing their dose of antidepressants such as venlafaxine are at an increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior. Online pharmacy: How to get your prescriptions easier - Deseret News

Image
While you may be used to heading to the pharmacy every few months to pick up a prescription, online pharmacies can save you a trip and help keep medications organized. If you haven't thought about transferring prescriptions to an online pharmacy, it may be time. A few clicks could mean no more standing in line at a brick-and-mortar location. Switching to an online pharmacy also results in more privacy, since no one behind you in line will ever overhear your conversation with the pharmacist. Most websites will allow you to set your Health Savings Account card as your payment selection and have options for using a co-pay option or paying without insurance. Be careful to only use licensed online pharmacies recommended by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. Websites with unlicensed pharmacies could sell medicines that are fake, expired or contain dangerous ingredients. Your personal information could be in danger as well since they may not protect it. After researchin...

Effect of topical formulation in lambs infected with orf vir | VMRR - Dove Medical Press

Image
Introduction Contagious ecthyma, also known as orf, contagious pustular dermatitis, sore mouth or scabby mouth, is a highly contagious eruptive skin condition of sheep, goats and other ruminants, although zoonotic transmission also occurs. Orf disease affects mainly young animals in the first year of their life, with severe outbreaks generally associated with intensive sheep husbandry or transport. Orf virus belongs to the genus Parapoxvirus, family Poxviridae, sub-family Chordopoxvirinae. 1 It is a pathogen with worldwide distribution, causing significant financial losses in livestock production. Transmission of orf is from direct or indirect contact with the orf virus from pustules of infected animals containing-virus or live vaccines, causing painful lesions in sheep and goats, and potentially people, especially farmers and veterinarians. Orf is very resistant in the environment, particularly in dry atmospheres, with the virus shown to be infective for up to 17 years. 2 Clinical...
