Controlling an emerging fungal threat: The Partners for Patient Safety program - Public Health Insider

You may have heard about antibiotic resistance in which bacterial infections cannot be controlled with standard antibiotics. Certain types of fungi, which can also colonize the body and lead to infections like bacteria do, can similarly be resistant to treatment. When these organisms are resistant to several different antibiotics, they are called multi-drug resistant organisms (MDROs). A new program underway in King County is aimed at early identification of these organisms with the goal of mitigating the spread of these MDROs in healthcare settings including those that serve the most vulnerable. A key project goal is to implement a surveillance system to identify and mitigate the spread of an emerging, often multi-drug resistant fungus called Candida auris or C. auris .  We talked with Claire Brostrom-Smith from Public Health – Seattle & King County, Marisa D'Angeli from Washington Department of Health, and Ron Csech from Kindred Hospital Seattle First Hi...

Typology Beard Dandruff Shampoo Review: A Simple And Effective Treatment - Fatherly

Image
Beard dandruff shampoos are an all-too-overlooked men's grooming product. Flakey beards everywhere can be treated — easily! — with a well-formulated shampoo. Something like Typology's nti-Dandruff Treatment Shampoo, a solid and simple product that gets to the source of the problem. According to Dr. Daniel Belkin of the New York Dermatology Group, Beard dandruff is caused by seborrheic dermatitis. This is a type of mild rash thought to be caused by the overproduction of sebum (the skin's natural oils) with an overgrowth of yeast. Dandruff typically shows up as redness and flaking on various parts of the body — especially oilier areas — such as the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, and the beard, causing a flurry of white flakes that seem to get stuck everywhere. Beard dandruff can be treated by washing with a product containing anti-fungal ingredients such as zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole, which can be found in many over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoos availabl...

Levothyroxine and Sinus Problems: What You Should Know - EndocrineWeb

Image
For decades, researchers have shown a link between low thyroid and sinus problems like nasal stuffiness, sinus congestion, and impaired hearing. This is because lack of thyroid hormone allows a chemical to accumulate in the face and cause puffiness. Some people with thyroid issues may not experience sinus problems until they begin to take levothyroxine (Synthroid) to treat their hypothyroidism. However, the treatment is not the cause of the sinus problems—in fact, it's typically a sign the dosage is not right. It's tough to get the exact dose of levothyroxine right for people with hypothyroidism, because each person is different. Here's what to know about what happens when thyroxine levels are too high and too low, and how they affect the sinuses in particular. Levothyroxine and Side Effects Levothyroxine (Synthroid) is an oral medication typically used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone. In some cases,...

Management of Lateral Epicondylitis Using Transdermal ... - Cureus

Image
Lateral epicondylitis (LE), also known as tennis elbow, is an overuse tendinopathy originating from the forearm extensor tendons as they attach to the lateral epicondyle of the elbow. Despite the suffix "itis," which suggests an inflammatory etiology, the pathology is no longer thought to be inflammatory in nature [1,2]. Although the pathophysiology of LE is not fully understood, it is now recognized as degenerative overuse tendinopathy (i.e., tendinosis) secondary to repetitive trauma to tendon fibrils [1,2]. Clinical features of tennis elbow include tenderness at the lateral epicondyle, and pain on resisted wrist extension or forearm supination, with normal elbow range of motion [3]. Mechanism of injury is commonly seen in sedentary individuals who transition between periods of underuse to overuse on a frequent basis, along with both recreational and high-level athletes [3]. LE can potentially occur in any sports or occupation that invo...
