Gayle Smith on "Face the Nation": ONE Campaign CEO warns against complacency in AIDS, Ebola fights - CBS News

Image
A new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and an ongoing AIDS crisis in Africa are among the top priorities for The ONE Campaign, an anti-poverty group led by CEO and President Gayle Smith. The new Ebola outbreak has killed over 300 people and could spread beyond the DRC, Smith told "Face the Nation" Sunday.  "I'm quite concerned that it hasn't risen to a higher level of attention on the world's agenda because as we know these viruses don't pay attention to borders, and they move very quickly [and] could kill a whole lot more people," she said.  The ONE Campaign was founded by Bono, the lead singer of U2. Smith served as the administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) from November 2015 to January 2018 and served as a top adviser to both former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.  On the subject of HIV/AIDS, Smith said she worries the global community is growing complacent, even as

Advertisement The ICIR investigations show that hundreds of millions of naira released for HIV campaigns, counselling and testing services may have ended in private pockets of contractors and government officials, as companies were specifically registered to siphon funds meant to save the lives of the infected. BRAZENLY STOLEN MONEY IN October of 2015, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) awarded 38 contracts to 23 firms at the cost of N1.2 billion. Their shared responsibilities were to conduct HIV counselling, testing and demand creation for HIV services in 26 out of Nigeria’s 36 states. That year, NACA broke its own fiscal record as its capital budget of N1, 930,500,120 was fully released and spent to the last kobo. GV-Sahuarita group aids asylum-seekers in Tucson - Sahuarita Sun

Local organizations, including one in Green Valley, are helping clothe and feed hundreds of asylum seekers dropped off by ICE agents at bus stations and churches over the past three months across the Southwest, including in Tucson. Overcrowded federal detention facilities and a spike in arrivals have prompted ICE to release hundreds of immigrants to non-profit groups or to simply drop them at bus stations. “There’s so much going on, it’s absolutely non-stop,” said Shura Wallin, co-founder of Green Valley-Sahuarita Samaritans. The frequent releases have strained faith and other non-profit organizations, who are providing necessities while attempting to contact sponsors or relatives of migrants so they have a place to stay while awaiting for an immigration hearing. Many of those at the shelters were granted asylum status after requesting it at the border. Others were picked up after crossing the border illegally and were processed under Operation Streamline. Memoirs of the AIDS Era - HivPlusMag.com

The Sea is Quiet Tonight by Michael H. Ward is the author’s deeply personal yet inspirational memoir of the early years of the AIDS epidemic. Ward is a retired psychotherapist and award-winning author who eloquently takes the reader back to a time where little was known about the disease and few survived. He candidly chronicles the decline and death of his partner, Mark, from AIDS complications. In doing so, Ward seeks not only to honor all lost in this generation, but also open a vital window to the past before modern medical advances helped to save lives. His story is wrenching in its detail of a time when a diagnosis was also a death sentence, and the humanity of the LGBTQ community shined brightest as it took care of its own. Ward’s partner Mark was only the 100th person in the state of Massachusetts diagnosed with AIDS, and Ward captures this terrifying moment in our history when even well meaning doctors had little to offer beyond hospice care. Editor’s note: This is the second of two articles on latent tuberculosis infection in children. The first article is available at  http://bit.ly/2PZtTDu . Tuberculosis is a rapidly growing global health problem. One-quarter of the world’s population is estimated to have latent (asymptomatic) tuberculosis defined as infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a person who has a positive tuberculin skin test (TST) or positive interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) result, no physical evidence of disease and a chest radiograph that is normal or reveals evidence of a healed infection. Latent tuberculosis infection can only be diagnosed by a positive TST or a positive IGRA result. More than 10 million new cases of tuberculosis occurred worldwide in 2015. Up to 10% of asymptomatically infected people will develop active tuberculosis, emphasizing the importance of identifying and treating the enormous reservoir of asymptomatically infected people. Pyrosequencing may benefit clinical decision making and reduce time to start of effective treatment in patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), according to study results published in Clinical Infectious Diseases . The emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) is a barrier to TB elimination and a threat to TB control. MDR-TB is resistant to the most effective first-line medications, including isoniazid and rifampin, and was reported in approximately 1.8% of patients with TB in California in 2017. Rapid diagnosis of drug-resistant TB is critical to the initiation of an effective treatment regimen. Culture-based phenotypic methods usually require > 4 weeks, which results in delayed diagnosis, treatment with ineffective drugs, poor treatment outcomes, and spread of drug-resista
