Fact-checking Crabtree: VUSD board president made claims about face masks and tuberculosis - Visalia Times-Delta and Tulare Advance-Register

CLOSE VUSD board trustee John Crabtree, (right).   (Photo: Ron Holman) Whether to wear face masks or not became a polarizing issue this election year — and during a Visalia Unified Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday night.   Board President John Crabtree devalued face masks before verbally lashing out at fellow board member Lucia Vázquez over a Visalia Times-Delta interview in which she expressed concern about board members prioritizing their political agenda over children. Crabtree’s comments troubled many Visalia residents watching the virtual meeting from home, according to social media posts. Residents worried about the health implications of Crabtree’s statement while others questioned its veracity.  “There are hundreds of thousands of people who die from tuberculosis every year, and yet we don’t wear masks in order to prevent us from getting tuberculosis,” Crabtree claimed at the meeting. He then told a puzzled Vázquez his comments weren’t a “political decis

Zoonoses: Brucellosis outbreak in China raises local concerns - DW (English)

More than a year after bacteria escaped from a factory for vaccines against brucellosis in northwest China, an outbreak of the disease in the region has raised concerns about how many people might really have been infected and the wider consequences. So far, 3,245 people have been confirmed as infected with the Brucella bacteria,  according to figures reported on the website of the health commission of the city of Lanzhou  in Gansu province, which date from September 15. The party newspaper Global Times on November 5, however, puts the number of infected higher, at 6,620. There are another 1,400 suspected cases. More than 21,000 people have been tested.  Even if at first glance this news is reminiscent of the unverified rumors about SARS-CoV2 escaping from a Chinese research laboratory in Wuhan,  this time, at least, it is not an unknown or novel disease that is in question. Nonetheless, these cases once again remind us how quickly pathogens can spread from animals to humans when th

A clinical score for identifying active tuberculosis while awaiting microbiological results: Development and validation of a multivariable prediction model in sub-Saharan Africa - PLoS Blogs

Abstract Background In highly resource-limited settings, many clinics lack same-day microbiological testing for active tuberculosis (TB). In these contexts, risk of pretreatment loss to follow-up is high, and a simple, easy-to-use clinical risk score could be useful. Methods and findings We analyzed data from adults tested for TB with Xpert MTB/RIF across 28 primary health clinics in rural South Africa (between July 2016 and January 2018). We used least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression to identify characteristics associated with Xpert-confirmed TB and converted coefficients into a simple score. We assessed discrimination using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration using Cox linear logistic regression, and clinical utility using decision curves. We validated the score externally in a population of adults tested for TB across 4 primary health clinics in urban Uganda (between May 2018 and December 2019). Model development was repeated de n
