DNR Pushes Hunters to Purge Pigs - WJFW-TV


RHINELANDER - The Oneida County Land and Water Conservation Department hosted its third annual Seed Sowing Party Wednesday morning. Volunteers scooped dirt and planted native seedlings at the Oneida County Courthouse.


"We are putting out, and I'm not kidding, probably 10,000 seeds from different species of wildflowers," said Pollinator Coordinator Baerbel Ehrig.


Ehrig says those seeds will help restore a number of natural habitats here in Oneida County. But first, nature must take its course.



THE NORTHWOODS - Thanksgiving means bringing out the best foods. The food we enjoy however may not be safe for animals.
"It's easy to think of your pets as part of the family and that they're people an when you're having a special meal, it's easy to [want to] include your pets," said Northwoods Pets owner Jennifer Marshall.
While that might like a nice gesture, it can be dangerous.

"We're not the same species," said Marshall. "And there are things out there such as onions and grapes are really good example that contain chemical compounds that the dog's digestive system cannot process properly."



STEVENS POINT - Worzalla held a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday to unveil its recent $12.5 million investment into expanding their company.

Worzalla's CEO and President, Jim Fetherston said this expansion will help the company become a leading book manufacturer in the United States.

"The reason it is important for us right now is a lot of book manufacturing has gone offshore to Asia," said Fetherston. "A lot of American book publishers would like to publish more books domestically."

The $12.5 million investment is expected to create 50 new jobs.

The mayor of Stevens Point, Kevin Wiza said he saw major benefits to the community from this expansion.



MADISON - Attorney General Josh Kaul says testing is finally finished on thousands of unanalyzed sexual assault evidence kits.

Kaul said Wednesday testing was finished on all 4,471 kits designated for analysis. The state Justice Department started analyzing the kits in 2016. Testing has resulted in a dozen criminal cases so far.



MADISON - A group that promotes student voting has filed a federal lawsuit challenging Wisconsin's student voter identification requirements.

The Andrew Goodman Foundation filed the lawsuit in Madison on Tuesday. The foundation alleges that requirements that students present IDs that contain the issuance date, the holder's signature and an expiration date no later than two years after the issuance date are too onerous and are designed to stop young people from voting in violation of the 26th Amendment.



GREEN BAY - Authorities released more details about the fatal shooting in Kewaunee County.

38-year-old Luis Cardona pulled 40-year-old Babette Caraballo into his vehicle as she was arriving to work at Hansen Foods. Cardona's vehicle was later located by law enforcement and a swat team was called in.

Sheriff Matt Joski said Cardona shot Caraballo, and then a deputy fatally shot Cardona.



RHINELANDER - The Rhinelander Police Department officially introduced a new member to its force Wednesday night.

It's a two-year-old K-9 named after Everest Metro Police Detective Jason Weiland.

Weiland died in the line of duty during a string of shootings in the Wausau area in 2017 which killed four people.

The detective's family took part in a ceremony at Rhinelander City Hall to hand over the police dog.

Crossroads Canine Rescue started the "K-9 for Cops" donation program after Weiland's death. The Belgian Malinois was chosen by Officer Mark Raddatz, who will also be its handler.
