The Agriculture ministry has recorded a massive reduction in brucellosis cases this year with only eight cases recorded, compared to 31 in 2018.
Presenting during the Bovine Tuberculosis Bovine Brucellosis Eradication Forum yesterday, Director Animal Health Production, Avinesh Dayal says the reduction follows the successful monitoring and continuous assessments by the ministry.
Dayal says the disease re-emerged in 2009 with over 2000 cases recorded in the past ten years.
“From 2009 when we detected the re-emergence until 19 November this year, as you see the graph, there is huge number of animals that is detected, and we started tallying these animals, then there was slight fluctuations along the way, and then now you can see that we are almost going down. In 2019 to date, we have almost 8 animals that we detected brucellosis, it is a very good sign. ”
Dayal says the ministry had to import cattle from New Zealand to help meet the demands of the industry.
The ministry recorded over 26,000 of cattle’s from January to November this year as part of its assessments and monitoring.
