Library needed for computer use

This senior citizen is pecking away this letter on a $20 Tracfone, my only source for the internet or a computer since the libraries closed in March. Using a stylus since my fingers can't do it. This is slow going.

I need computer usage to write and print letters, and I'm not alone. I can't afford all the expenses of a computer, printer, ink cartridges, internet costs, plus virus protection. (I was hacked in 2015.)

As a retired Air Force nurse captain, I have searched for affordable housing. Inflation got me too. My month's salary in the Air Force in the 1970s is a month's rent now.

And how is it that 500 boats can come out to support a wealthy man who has broken all the Ten Commandments while people are in food lines?

Alice Mack, Fort Myers

Editor';s note: Five Lee County libraries will reopen Tuesday, May 26, with limited hours, services and building capacities (25%), the library system stated on its web page. Computer use will be limited to one hour per person, per day; and hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes will be available. Patrons will be expected to follow the CDC’s social distancing guideline of 6 feet apart from people not in your party. Face covering is recommended but not required.

'Idol worship' of Trump 'disturbing'

It was a little disturbing to see hundreds of boaters displaying garish Trump paraphernalia from flags to life-size cutouts of the Dear Leader.

It’s one thing to support a political candidate based on serious, thoughtful judgment of their qualifications; it’s quite another to support a candidate who has a record like Trump’s with idol worship. There is really no other word for someone flying four large Trump flags from their half-million-dollar boat.

One person, when asked their reason for supporting Trump, replied, “He cuts my taxes.”

These people seem only interested in blindly following a hate-spewing, ignorant, govern-by-gut, anti-science know-nothing as we approach 100,000 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S., which a recent study concluded was made much worse by the government's slow response.*

It seems these Trump supporters desire not to be part of a “great generation” but the last generation, riding the wakes of expensive boats right up to the whirlpool of climate- and virus-expedited doom.

Fuel for boats or food for jobless?

Re. "500 boats participate in parade for Trump" on Saturday:

Just think, the vast amount spent to fuel this armada could have been spent on something frivolous, like a donation to a food bank or helping unemployed people who have tried but been unable to get their benefits.

Store too crowded to be healthy?

Hoping to shop for a few items, I visited a store (name withheld by an editor) in the Naples area Saturday, May 23. I immediately noticed there were no posted notices reminding shoppers to adhere to safe distancing practices.

As it was the Saturday of the holiday weekend, the store was crowded and it was immediately apparent that no safe distancing was possible.

In addition, employees, even those dispensing food items, were not wearing masks. Very few employees were wearing gloves even at checkout; and free food samples were available. Incredible at this time.

If you care about your health and safety, do not support a store that does not adhere to safe practices, but rather one that cares about the well-being of its workers and customers.

Dog imports and disease scrutinized

Please support H.R. 6921. Importing dogs from other countries is wrong and puts us, our pets and our livestock in grave danger.

More than 1 million dogs are imported into the U.S. each year, according to the CDC, yet only about 1 percent of these dogs are screened for serious diseases they can carry. We would not tolerate this lack of oversight for cattle, poultry or swine arriving in the U.S., and we should not tolerate it for the animals that are our closest companions.

The U.S. dog import system is broken. Rabies, canine flu and brucellosis, screwworm and a host of other serious diseases, parasites and vector-borne diseases already have been carried into the U.S. by imported dogs.

Please support the Healthy Dog Importation Act - H.R. 6921. Protect our pets, America's livestock and the people who live and work with animals.

Ted Bell, Port Charlotte

Editor's note: U.S. Rep. Ralph Lee Abraham, R-La., introduced H.R. 6921 "to amend the Animal Health Protection Act with respect to the importation of live dogs, and for other purposes" on May 19, 2020, and it was referred to the House Agriculture Committee.
